Being An Advocate
October 2024
MCEDSV, DVS, and MiVAN
In this course, we will explore the advocate’s role and define the guiding principles of advocacy: being intersectional, survivor-centered, trauma-informed. We will outline individual advocacy skills including empowerment-based communication, empathy, active listening, crisis intervention, and consider how systems impact survivor efforts. Finally, we will discuss being an advocate within an agency, including how agency culture, conflict management, and horizontal hostility can impact us as individuals and the work we do.
